ANGLICAN Poetry: Lewis

FROM C. S. LEWIS

He whom I bow to only knows to whom I bow
When I attempt the ineffable Name, murmuring Thou,
And dream of Pheidian fancies and embrace in heart
Symbols (I know) which cannot be the thing thou art.
Thus always, taken at their word, all prayers blaspheme
Worshipping with frail images a folk-lore dream,
And all men in their praying, self-deceived, address
The coinage of their own unquiet thoughts, unless
Thou in magnetic mercy to Thyself divert
Our arrows, aimed unskilfully, beyond desert;
And all men are idolaters, crying unheard
To a deaf idol, if thou take them at their word.

Take not, oh Lord, our literal sense.  Lord, in thy great,

Unbroken speech our limping metaphor translate.

ANGLICAN Poetry: Herbert

FROM GEORGE HERBERT

Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life:
Such a Way as gives us breath:
Such a Truth as ends all strife:
Such a Life as killeth death.

Come, My Light, my Feast, my Strength:
Such a Light, as shows a feast:
Such a Feast, as mends in length:
Such a Strength, as makes his guest.

Come, my Joy, my Love, my Heart:
Such a Joy, as none can move:
Such a Love, as none can part:
Such a Heart, as joys in love.

                                    +++

      Teach me thy love to know;
   That this new light, which now I see,
   May both the work and workman show:
Then by a sunne-beam I will climbe to thee.

                                    +++

My joy, my life, my crown!
   My heart was meaning all the day,
   Somewhat it fain would say:
And still it runneth mutt’ring up and down
With onely this, My joy, my life, my crown.

ANGLICAN Poetry: Laud

FROM WILLIAM LAUD

Lord, bless this kingdom, we beseech thee,
that religion and virtue may season all sorts of men,
that there may be peace within the gates,
and plenty within the palaces of it.
In peace, we beseech thee, so preserve it,
that it corrupt not;
in war, so defend it, that it suffer not;
in plenty, so order it, that it riot not;
in want, so pacify and moderate it,
that it may patiently and peaceably see thee,
the only full supply both of men and states;
that so it may continue a place and a people
to do thee service to the end of time;
through Jesus Christ our only

Savior and Redeemer.  Amen.
